Editing By-elections 2013

The purpose of this page is to provide the latest status of by-elections that could (or will) happen prior to the next General Election. 

When an MPP resigns a by-election must be called within six months to replace the representative.  The first two resignations occurred on February 14, 2013 so those by-elections must be called by August 14.  It is likely that by-elections will be called for all vacant seats by that date.  August 14 is a Wednesday, and writs are normally dropped on a Wednesday.  Polling day is on Thursday five weeks later.  If Premier Wynne waits until August 14 to call the by-elections; 

The writs were issued on Wednesday July 3, 2013. 
*Nominations opened Thursday July 11 (one week after the writ was issued)
*Nominations closed at 2:00 PM on July 18 (two weeks after the writ was issued).  Endorsements must be submitted to Elections Ontario by this date as well.  
*Polling day was Thursday August 1 (four weeks after the writ was issued)

In the five by-elections we received a total of 972 votes, or 0.58%. &nbsp;

Dan Dominato in Windsor-Tecumseh received the highest vote per centage. &nbsp;He had probably the most media exposure (2 dedicated columns and one video), distributed the most pamphlets, and put up the most signs.&nbsp;

The Freedom Party ran a well-known person (Wayne Gretsky's uncle) in London West, contibuting to Geoff Serbee's low vote count.&nbsp;

Platforms were printed by ICS Print Design in Pickering Town Centre (1355 Kingston Rd., Unit 118, Pickering, ON, L1V 1B8). &nbsp;800 were shipped to Dan Dominato, 100 to Jean-Serge Brisson, 100 to Geoff Serbee and 100 to Andrew Falby in Sarnia via Canada Post. &nbsp;500 were personnally delivered to Hans Kunov and 50 to Heath Thomas. &nbsp;Six copies were mailed to each member of the Executive Committee and Ethics Committee, Gabe Valente (Auditor), Rob Ferguson (Regional Coordinator ONT-SW), and Angie Liao (substantial donor and volunteer). &nbsp;

Jean-Serge Brisson, our candidate in this riding in 2011, has volunteered to run.

11 July - Andrew Phillips submitted Jean-Serge's Nomination Paper to the RO. Signatures were accepted, but J-S had failed to sign the page delegating Andrew to submit the nomination. A couple of emails rectified the situation. Jean-Serge also advised that the the riding on the C-1 and Candidate Application had Glengarry-Prescott-Russell, his home riding, instead of Ottawa South. He crossed out the wrong name and wrote in Ottawa South.

26 July - JS and 5 other planted 50 signs in the riding - took about 90 minutes. People did notice. Freedom had no signs, greens had some - probably more than us. Of course the other three had LOTS. Next time we need 2 sizes. Maybe about 10 4x bigger (twice as wide, and twice as high) - this would match the normal size of the other parties. Maybe only around 10 of the smaller ones for use in ACM and a few lawn signs. This would cost the same - but be more effective. Would require more labour to plant ten bigger signs than just pushing those flimsy rods into the ground. In a general, especially in an urban, multi-riding area, with generic signs, we can make less do more because we wouldn't have to worry about riding boundaries - just good visible points that would benefit all candidates.

We had a team of six that actively participated: JS, Andrew P, Dave, Darcy Neal, myself (Rob) and Phillip R and also Andrew S scrutineered a poll. Note only one of these people lives in the riding. Also, no attempt really was made to bring in new volunteers from other members in the area. These are the core people that are automatically engaged in everything. We did paperwork, signs, ACM, media requests.

Booklets/canvassing - we didn't do any door knocking or distribution of literature.

Media: We got 2 radio hits, primarily due to Dave's relationship with Nick. (It pays to be friendly). We got a couple of hits in the Metro. We got ignored by the Citizen

My assessment of our performance in this riding was "hold". Our candidate does have name recognition in this riding and in the wider community having run before and being a prominent local activist. There were lots of additional fringe candidates cluttering the market. We beat Freedom handily. We held our vote.

We should expect to gain one or two new members as a result of the investment in time and dollars. I don't know whether we did or not.

Comment on materials. The materials were really great. Nice to have some good tools. As previously noted, need a second larger size sign for use on roadways. Same design (mostly) except need to leave about 4 inches open on the two edges to account for the 2x2 wood to attach sign to. Also, when planting these larger signs - use a cross piece on top so when the wind blows, the sign doesn't bend inward and buckle. Also, booklet, back page should be redone next printing. People should be pitched and encouraged to sign up as a member or donate dollars using the website. A fill in the blank form is 1990s and is relatively ineffective (IMHO).

Ontario Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Laurel Broten has [http://toronto.ctvnews.ca/liberal-cabinet-minister-laurel-broten-leaving-politics-1.1338637 announced her resignation] from provincial politics, effective July 2/13.

Hans Kunov was our candidate in 2011 and has agreed to run again, provided someone helps him collect signatures. (Allen Small has agreed to help.) We have three Inquiries but no other Members in this riding.

Adjacent ridings include:

*Parkdale-High Park, 12 Members, including Andreas Maurochos and Rob Rojas;
*Etobicoke Centre, 4 members, including Alex Bussman;
*Mississauga South, 2 members, including Ron White (frequent Pub Night attendee);
*Mississauga East-Cooksville, 5 members, including Rick and Barb Darwin, life members.

This is a high profile by-election since it features two city councilors running for the PCs and Liberals.

July 9 - Allen Small and John Shaw helped Hans collect signatures, standing on the corner of Bloor and&nbsp;Royal York Rd.&nbsp; Hans had much more success with passers-by than Allen and John, probably because he was the candidate. Hans will collect a few more signatures and should have enough.

Sam Apelbaum was our candidate in 2011, but has indicated he is not interested in running again. Heath Thomas lives in the riding and ran in Pickering-Scarborough East in 2011.

'''July 3''' - Jim spoke to Heath and he agreed to run. Jim volunteered to help him collect signatures. Heath ran in ward 44 in the last municipal elections and plans to run again in the next municipal elections. Ward 44 overlaps Scarborough-Guildwood and Heath believes running provincially will help his name recognition.
